The Gabrovo Biennial of Humor and Satire in Art is one of the largest and oldest visual art forums in Bulgaria. The forthcoming 25th edition on the theme of Economy of Means is dedicated to ecology and it will be held from May 20 to September 30, 2022. It will encompass juried exhibitions of cartoons and contemporary art, as well as a curated exhibition. Except works by artists from around the world, the Biennial will offer a rich parallel program of events – lectures, panels, screenings, performances, workshops, children’s creative and educational workshops.
The Gabrovo Biennale is organized by the Museum of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo, the Municipality of Gabrovo and the Ministry of Culture; partners in the accompanying program of the 25th edition will be some of the most active environmental organizations in Bulgaria.
The major objective of the forthcoming edition of the Gabrovo Biennale is to draw the public’s attention to current environmental issues through the means of art and humor.
The Gabrovo Biennale is one of the longest-running visual art forums in Bulgaria and the largest international event held by the Museum of Humor and Satire. It includes competitions for the best present-day achievements of humorous and satirical works in the field of cartoon and contemporary art. It is held from May to September. It started in 1973 within the 9th Festival of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo as an international competition in two sections – Cartoon and Small Satirical Sculpture. For 48 years now the Biennial continues to promote the best achievements of humor and satire in Bulgarian and world art. Over the years, artists from 171 countries have taken part in it. The Biennial started with the idea of being a “bridge” between artists from the East and the West; today the Biennale is one of the major international art forums in Bulgaria.
