At the end of July on Perelik peak, close to the town of Smolyan, is held Perelik Eco Jazz Festival. The event is organized for the 14th consecutive year. The festival is part of the national cultural calendar of Bulgaria and is getting more and more popular. The specific local culture and old folklore tradition provide special atmosphere to the place. The event attracts great public interest and is supported by the Italian Cultural Institute, the US Embassy in Bulgaria and other sponsors.
The main purpose of the festival is every year in the heart of the Rhodope Mountain to provoke communication not only between artists and audience but also between human beings and nature. Jazz is the main line because improvisation is the highest form of creativity and craftsmanship that gives freedom and space of thought. The idea is to maximize the merging of musicians and audiences with the art and the natural and untouched natural environment in the acoustic environment of the mountain. Heat and glow of fires lend magic to the event. The Jazz Festival calls for a more reasonable and ecological existence. Villages of tents, parking lots, as well as hundreds of cars populate the space around the specially prepared hall, made of thousands of tons of straw.
