The Traditional swimming marathon “Galata – Varna” has become one of the most emblematic sports events. This year, it will conduct on 1st August. More than 250 swimmers, mainly from Bulgaria, but also from abroad will participate in the competition.
Traditional swimming marathon “Galata – Varna” is one of the oldest competitions of this kind in our country. It conducts every year since 1939, and the only time when there was no start was in 1994 due to political reasons. The founders of the swimming marathon are engineer Georgi Barnev, engineer Vasil Kardjiev and the lawyer Demirdjiev, who first swim the distance from Galata to Varna (around 4000 m.) on 14th August 1914.
Once a year, during the first Sunday of August, you can swim the Varna bay, relying only on your strength and endurance. The layout of the traditional swimming marathon starts from Galata and concludes on second buna, covering the distance of 4000 m.
The first six from both men and women who finish the layout receive money award, as well as the fastest local man/woman, disabled person and the oldest person. All swimmers receive T-shirts and charter for participation.
